Report Demonstrates Supreme Court Pattern of Overreach Favoring Powerful Corporate Interests

Alliance for Justice, as part of its ongoing efforts to analyze a growing pattern of corporate bias in the U.S. Supreme Court, has released a new report that reveals that “since John Roberts became Chief Justice in 2005, the Supreme Court has demonstrated an increased readiness to do whatever it takes to twist the law to protect powerful interests at the expense of everyday Americans.”

The report, entitled “The Roberts Court’s Record of Overreaching,” demonstrates through an analysis of 13 recent cases that a conservative majority, led by Chief Justice Roberts and joined principally by Justices Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas, and Alito, has “overstepped the boundaries of the proper role of the high court.” Examples are presented that show how the Roberts Court frequently takes cases it does not need to hear, answers legal questions not squarely before it, makes up new laws out of thin air, and settles questions best left to fact finders in lower courts.
