New Report: Scientific Atrophy Threatens American Economy

Fiber optics, the transistor, the laser -- all products that exist thanks to the kind of scientific innovation that has helped to secure America's position as an economic and military leader in the world. And yet, U.S. Ph.D.s make $15,000 less conducting post-doctoral research than master degree recipients who leave academia to enter the workforce.

In the coming years, science and technology will only play a larger role in the strength of our national economy as emerging high-tech sectors build upon advanced scientific research. But is America ready to lead in the race for new technology?

Not without scientists, says Michael Biercuk in his new report for the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI). And America's best and brightest new scientists are getting pulled away from research fields by higher pay with less schooling.
